The UAW International Human Resources Department is seeking to hire an HR Assistant Director. This individual will assist the HR Director in managing human resources functions, including contract interpretation & administration, grievance handling & bargaining, recruitment, employee relations, investigations and HR policies. They may also be responsible for specific areas such as the employee disability leave process, including maternity & paternity leaves, Workers Compensation and FMLA.

This role will help ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures and advise employees on HR-related matters. The Human Resources Departments role is vital as the bridge between employees and management, addressing concerns and ensuring UAW policies are followed. Candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

This position will be based at the UAW Solidarity House located in Detroit, Michigan and will report to the Human Resources Director.

Job Description and Key Duties:

Successful HR Assistant Director candidates will possess a blend of leadership skills and technical HR knowledge, problem solving skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, while maintaining confidentiality and discretion.

The ideal candidate can handle complex situations with integrity and professionalism and should be adaptable, comfortable with change, able to adjust quickly to changing priorities while being able to balance demanding requests while maintaining a positive work environment. The candidate is both a team player who can work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, and an independent worker skilled in time and task management.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Recruitment and Hiring: Assisting with job postings, interviewing, and selection of candidates, ensuring a diverse and qualified pool.
Employee Relations: Addressing employee concerns, resolving conflicts, and ensuring a positive work environment.
HR Policies and Procedures: Implementing and maintaining HR policies, procedures, and practices, ensuring compliance with legal regulations.
Performance Management: Overseeing the employee evaluation and performance management process, providing advice & coaching to managers.
Compliance: Ensuring compliance with relevant employment laws and regulations.
Data and Reporting: Maintaining accurate HR records, generating reports, and analyzing HR data.
Staff Supervision: Supervising and mentoring HR staff members.
Labor Relations: Assisting with union negotiations, contract administration and grievance handling.
Project Management: Overseeing HR-related special projects.
Adaptability and Change Management: Must be adaptable to evolving workplace needs and comfortable with changes in policy and procedure.
Organizational and Time Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, therefore strong organizational and time management skills are essential.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication, both written and verbal, is essential for interacting with employees, managers, and stakeholders. Strong interpersonal skills are needed for conflict resolution and building relationships.
Collaborating with Stakeholders: Working closely with Legal, UAW Compliance department, the Monitors Office and other departments.
Meeting Participation: Attending regular meetings with various departments to discuss ongoing cases.
Assist with investigations, complaints & concerns, grievance handling, disciplinary proceedings and arbitrations as needed.
Working with UAW International departments & Regions as needed.
Integrity and professionalism: Individual must act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality, especially when handling sensitive information.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration or a related field.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in HR or HR-related roles.
Strong understanding of HR principles, practices, and regulations.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of relevant HR software and systems.
Leadership and supervisory skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Effective time and priority management
Excellent listening skills as well as written and verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with the labor movement and its structure is valuable.
Grievance handling and contract bargaining expertise
Strong familiarity with UAW contract language and patterns within UAW-represented industries.
Ability to lead a team and mentor other staff
Strong attention to detail
Commitment to confidentiality and discretion
Discretion and professionalism in navigation of organizational complexity
Drafting and proofreading for internal and external dissemination.
Completion of assigned tasks and projects on time and in a professional manner
Support International Union, UAW institutional policies, procedures, and objectives
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Forms) remote meeting software (Zoom, Teams, etc.) and related software.
Must be able to travel
A valid driver’s license and a working automobile
