Position: Front Desk Associate (WORK STUDY Student Position)
Job Summary:
Under general supervision, is responsible for operation and general maintenance of the circulation desk and collection and inspection of library materials at the San Antonio Public Library. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises no supervision.
Work Location:
One of 28 library locations.
Work Hours:
Work schedule varies and is based on departmental needs;
Saturday – Friday work week; weekends and evenings required.
Essential Job Functions
Attends to the circulation needs of library patrons, including checking materials in and out and resolving patron complaints regarding overdue items, fines and other circulation matters.
Collects library fines and fees.
Processes requests for reservations of library materials and enters data into the library’s automated system.
Provides vital records following appropriate procedures at assigned library locations.
Assists patrons in obtaining library cards.
Prepares and submits statistical and cash reports.
Answers inquiries and refers patrons requiring professional assistance to appropriate staff.
Maintains supplies, occasionally lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
May train other clerical employees regarding circulation procedures and policies.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
Preferred Qualifications
Optimistic and welcoming approach to customer interactions.
Positive experience working in public service.
Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic arithmetic, spelling, and grammar.
Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
Ability to maintain clerical records and prepare statistical reports.
Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job, with or without accommodations.
