Manager of Human Resources Jobs in Honolulu, HI at Aloha United Way
General Summary:
The Manager of Human Resources plays a vital leadership role at Aloha United Way (AUW), responsible for stewarding all HR-related systems, strategy, and compliance in support of AUW’s mission and values. Reporting directly to the VP of Operations and working closely with executive leadership and department managers, this role ensures the consistent application of HR policies, manages employee relations, and leads people operations aligned with AUW’s culture of equity, collaboration, and high performance.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver with strong working knowledge of human resources principles, labor law, collective bargaining agreements, and best practices in nonprofit employee engagement and DEI.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
HR Operations & Compliance
Serve as the primary point of contact for all HR matters.
Ensure organizational compliance with employment laws and regulations, including EEOC, FLSA, OSHA, and state/local requirements.
Maintain accurate employee records and documentation, including in the HRIS (iSolved).
Administer HR policies and procedures for both bargaining and non-bargaining employees.
Ensure ongoing compliance with AUW’s collective bargaining agreement.
Payroll, Benefits, and Compensation
Oversee and process bi-weekly payroll, ensuring accuracy and legal compliance.
Manage benefit programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), and leave programs in partnership with ProService Hawaii.
Advise leadership on compensation strategies that ensure internal equity and market competitiveness.
Talent Acquisition & Employee Lifecycle
Partner with hiring managers to lead recruitment and hiring strategies that align with AUW’s values and DEI priorities.
Manage onboarding and offboarding processes, including orientation, exit interviews, and system transitions.
Provide guidance on employment classification and contract structures (W-2, 1099, interns, etc.).
Company Culture, Employee Engagement & Development
Design and implement initiatives that promote wellness, morale, and team cohesion.
Partner with Operations to develop and coordinate staff development training.
Manage culture tools to support performance management and continuous feedback.
Facilitate inclusive workplace practices and lead compliance with United Way Worldwide initiatives.
Employee Relations & Performance
Guide managers in performance evaluation processes and improvement plans.
Address employee relations matters with discretion and equity.
Investigate and document workplace incidents and conflicts; collaborate with legal or external counsel as needed.
Additional Duties
Support VP of Operations and CEO with strategic planning, work plan development, and special projects.
Participate in AUW events and contribute to a culture of collaboration and community engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
Skills & Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of human resources principles, laws, benefits administration, and collective bargaining.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to counsel, mediate, and coach.
High attention to detail with proven ability to manage sensitive information.
Experience in nonprofit or values-based organizations preferred.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
3-5+ years of experience in human resources.
PHR/SPHR certification preferred.
Experience with HRIS systems (preferably Prism) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Required Qualifications
Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Must pass a background and drug test.
Must be located in Hawai‘i or have pre-existing plans to relocate.
Must work in person at least three days per week, with more in-office presence required during initial training.
