Research Clerical Assistant
The Toxicology Centre is the hub of research and administrative support for the U of S Toxicology Graduate, Undergraduate and many research programs.
Primary
Purpose:
To provide services within the Toxicology Centre and including administrative support to the Manager of Finance and Operations, and general clerical support to other activities within the Toxicology Centre in support of research programs.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager of Finance and Operations, this position functions as a member of a front office team within an often fast-paced, demanding environment. The position establishes and maintains professional working relationships with a diverse group of people, including faculty, students, staff, the University community, and visitors to the Centre, has frequent interruptions, and multiple simultaneous demands.
This half-time position will be Monday to Friday mornings at 3.75 hours per day.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Receipt of courier packages including biological samples and dangerous goods.
Preparation of chemical, biological, and organic samples, considered dangerous goods, to be shipped nationally and internationally.
Ensuring all Toxicology Centre staff and students receive proper training to carry out their functions.
The strategic evaluation and selection of laboratory supplies and equipment for all research laboratories requiring evaluating product quality, supplier reliability, regulatory compliance, and compatibility with ongoing and upcoming research projects.
Collaboration with principal investigators, lab managers, and procurement specialists ensures that the selection process aligns with institutional goals, enhances operational efficiency, and supports scientific advancements.
Other duties as assigned.
Education: Ideally, the successful candidate would have a university undergraduate degree or direct work experience in toxicology or a science-related discipline.
Experience: At least two years of office experience is required, preferably in a University setting or comparable.
Skills: The successful candidate will have effective written and verbal communication skills, be able to adapt and prioritize to potential high volume situations, have an aptitude for working in a team-oriented atmosphere, possess exemplary interpersonal skills, exhibit strong attention to detail, have the ability to handle interaction with a wide range of people with tact, diplomacy, and intercultural sensitivity, be open to learning new procedures, encompass a positive, friendly and outgoing attitude, exhibit strong work ethic and dedication to the position, have database management skills, and possess demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite computer applications.
