Position Summary

The Secretary I – Command Communications provides administrative, research review, and communications support to the Office of Command Communications at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

This position reviews research and communication documents, maintains records, tracks submissions, prepares communication materials, and provides general administrative support. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Human Subject Research documents for completeness and compliance with applicable Federal, DoD, Army, Navy, and WRNMMC requirements.
  • Review protocols, reports, presentations, abstracts, manuscripts, posters, and other communication materials.
  • Identify missing information, errors, or deficiencies in submissions.
  • Maintain electronic records and track research and communication submissions.
  • Coordinate with WRNMMC staff, clinics, providers, researchers, and leadership to obtain required information and clearances.
  • Provide updates on the status of research and communication requests.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist with internal audits and process improvement activities.
  • Prepare and edit correspondence, reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and other documents.
  • Create basic flyers, posters, brochures, web banners, graphs, and other communication materials.
  • Operate standard office and reproduction equipment, including printers, copiers, laminators, and folding equipment.
  • Track deadlines and ensure assigned actions are completed on time.
  • Maintain organized electronic and paper files.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Perform general administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Strong administrative, organizational, and document-review skills.
  • Research, proofreading, and editing experience.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Basic graphic design and document-formatting skills.
  • Ability to research and resolve administrative issues independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, healthcare providers, researchers, management, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Understanding of organizational structure and chain of command.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a Federal Government, Department of Defense, military, healthcare, or research environment.
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Human Subject Research processes.
  • Experience reviewing research or regulatory documents.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Publisher, or similar design software.
