Job Description
Are you passionate about creating a positive and supportive workplace culture? The City of Chesapeake is seeking a Human Resources (HR) Generalist I to join our Employee Relations and Learning & Development (Training) team.
What You’ll Do:
As a Human Resources (HR) Generalist I in Employee Relations and Learning & Development (Training), you’ll serve as a trusted partner to supervisors and managers across the City. You’ll support and promote a positive, fair, and respectful workplace culture by assisting with resolution of workplace concerns, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and policies, and providing guidance on talent development opportunities available to City staff.
Key Responsibilities of the Human Resources (HR) Generalist:
Employee Relations
Serve as the initial point of contact for employee relations issues, concerns, or workplace conflicts for assigned City departments.
Document and track employee relations matters, ensuring accurate and timely recordkeeping.
Provide support in interpreting personnel policies, procedures, and applicable employment laws.
Assist in preparing reports, correspondence, and recommendations related to employee relations cases.
Support the administration of corrective action processes and performance management guidance.
Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a high level of professionalism in handling sensitive information.
Learning & Development
Assist with training and education initiatives, to include New Employee Orientation and other in-house facilitated trainings.
Conduct research, compile data, and present a variety of studies, analyses, and reports to measure success and make recommendations for improvement
Enhance and drive a culture of continuous learning that will deliver an improved employee experience for all levels of the organization.
Schedule and coordinate learning programs, assist with development of training curriculum, and facilitate training sessions.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in human resources, management, business or public administration, or a closely related field.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this job classification requires a minimum of four years of related, professional, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or citywide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Employee relations and training facilitation experience.
Local government experience.
CPTD, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, and/or SPHR designations.
